Sometimes when someone asks you how you feel you often say that you are fine, even when you are not. Often something happens in your body. Your body reacts, your nervous system reacts.
Pain, tension, shortness of breath, changes in your heart rate, a sick feeling in your stomach, a numb feeling, you name it... Your body is communicating.
These reactions, emotions and signals have something important to tell you, if you are willing to listen to them. Trauma is stored in our body, in our fascia and in our nervous system; “Our issues are in our tissues”. In Yin Yoga Therapy® we will investigate the signals that your body gives off and you will learn to listen to what your body is telling you.
Thoughts, emotions and memories are not only stored in our brains, but also in our bodies. Trauma causes the somatic nervous system to activate the autonomic responses 'fight, flight, freeze'. Because your nervous system often unconsciously recalls the event through certain triggers, your body gets caught in a stress response that takes place and gets stuck, without you being aware of it.
There is a close connection between the state of our nervous system and our state of mind. When our nervous system feels unsafe, we automatically feel more anxious because the fear center of our brain (amygdala) takes over. When we are stressed, our thoughts are automatically more negative, impulsive and more focused on worst case scenarios.
Trying to stop negative or fearful thoughts with positive thinking doesn’t work, and telling ourselves to calm down doesn’t work either. Telling ourselves to get over it or let it go won’t work unless our nervous system feels safe.
Regulating our nervous system brings our mind into a more neutral state and teaches us that we do not have to fall into negative spirals, fearful thought patterns and doomsday scenarios.
Our feelings, emotions and memories are everywhere in our body, both physically, mentally and energetically. These are all closely connected. From a Yoga and Ayurvedic perspective, this concept is important to understand how trauma works in the body and mind. Psychological trauma affects the body, physical trauma affects the mind, and both affect you as a whole.
An imbalance in our energy household can cause numerous physical and health complaints, but also has an effect on our mental and emotional well-being. This disharmony can be caused by trauma, but also by many other things (stress, unhealthy diet, etc.).
During Yin Yoga Therapy® we work on flexibility and mobility in our Yin tissues, but we also expose the deep layers of tension that we hold in our bodies. We work towards releasing emotional tension and we clear the path where our energy has stagnated or created blockages. We give our nervous system the space to release locked-in tension, ultimately reuniting the pieces of ourselves that felt broken or unwanted.
Many ancient healing systems teach us that our physical existence is animated by a dynamic energy – in Eastern medicine also called Chi (or Qi). This energy flows through everything from your body to the entire planet we live on. Chi is the life force energy, the breath of life, just like prana in Indian culture, pneuma in ancient Greece, mana in Hawaiian culture, Manitou in Native American culture and more.
Chi flows through our body along different channels in flowing patterns that we call meridians. We work with 12 main meridians that each correspond to certain organs (an important function of chi is to support the functioning of our organs). Keeping these energy channels free of obstacles and blockages is therefore good for our health and the exercises from Yin Yoga Therapy® actively support this process.
Yin Yoga Therapy® is a path to emotional healing and releasing energetic blockages, while reactivating the healing powers that our body naturally possesses. We work with asanas (exercises from Yin Yoga), the Taoist concept of the 5 elements (earth, metal, water, wood & fire), the principles of Yin & Yang, Pranayama, the flow of energy in our body, as used in Eastern medicine and acupuncture.
By moving from the thinking mind to our physical body and eventually back to our mental body via our energetic body, you will learn to reconnect and communicate with yourself on a cellular level. We work with customized exercises that leave enough space for all feelings and emotions that may arise. All our sessions are trauma-aware. I help you to relax, open up and reconnect body and mind in a safe environment. Learning to feel safe in everyday life is key and I am happy to help you achieve that goal.
