Doing Yoga

Yin is in! And it is one of my favorite yoga styles. In my class the focus is on the functionality of the poses and not on aesthetics. Yin is personal, it is about you and what your body needs at this moment. Yin is for everyone..

In Yin Yoga we work on flexibility and mobility in our Yin tissues (connective tissue, tendons, joints and ligaments) and strengthening our bones. Because these are not elastic tissues it is important that the muscles around the connective tissue are completely relaxed.

In contrast to other forms of yoga, we therefore hold the poses for a longer period (at least 3 to 5 minutes). We move into the pose until we feel resistance. When we reach that limit, we pause and give our body the time and opportunity to open up more and invite us to go even deeper into the pose. From there, we may go a bit further, or we may stay where we are. As long as we do not experience real pain, we remain in the position, accepting the discomfort we experience at that moment and letting gravity do the work.

Your boundaries are constantly changing and in this way you become aware of your boundaries. We are not only talking about your physical boundaries, but also about your emotional and mental boundaries. When you have reached this point of reasonable, but not maximum resistance, you nestle yourself in the position and stay there without moving yourself any further. We bring the silence into our body, into our breathing and into our mind. Our muscles are inactive, our breathing is quiet, unforced, soft and neutral and reaches deep into our belly. When our body experiences silence and our breathing is calm, we have created the right conditions for silence to arise in our mind.

In Yin Yoga we integrate the wisdoms of Taoism, Traditional Chinese medicine and experience the principles of mindfulness on a physical level. We work with the 12 most important meridians (energy channels) in our body which translate to the 5 elements and we work with our chakras. Each lesson has a different theme and in each lesson we focus on a certain area. This can be a physical area, but it can also be focused on certain emotions or based on 1 of the elements.

You can contact me for workshops for companies, festivals and/or retreats (short-term retreats abroad are negotiable). If you have a health club or gym in Dordrecht or the surrounding area and are looking for a Yoga teacher to fill in, you can of course always contact me. The lessons/workshops can also be given in English on request.

In addition to the regular group lessons, there is also an option for private lessons. These are given in a yoga studio or at home and cost €50.00 per lesson (60 minutes) or €65.00 for 90 minutes.

We also offer the possibility to address specific discomforts on an individual level and to remove blockages on a physical, emotional or mental level. This form goes deeper and is more focused on healing and is completely tailored to your personal situation. A customized plan is made for this and 1 on 1 lessons will be given (this is also possible at your home). Read more about Yin Yoga Therapy here.

Slow (Vinyasa) Flow

My Slow (Vinyasa) Flow classes are good for full body flexibility, but at the same time it is a great class to release tension and get in touch with your body.

We move very mindfully, in connection with our breathing and we open ourselves up to release tension and allow relaxation.

We work on the flexibility and mobility of our body and we eliminate tension. You give yourself the space to eliminate the tension you want to let go of, on a physical, mental or emotional level.

I don’t think people realize the boost we get from exercise. Exercise is a fantastic tool that helps release physical, mental and emotional tension and anxiety. When we move our bodies, we move our stuck and stored energies and tensions, which helps release feelings of stress, anxiety and nervousness.

When our energy stagnates, mental and emotional stress has nowhere to go and builds up in the form of tension, fatigue, anxiety and feeling rushed.

Exercise is a natural antidepressant, yet many people still view it as simply a way to burn calories.

The Slow (vinyasa) flow is a gentle flow, which means that we do focus on connecting our breathing with the movements, but we do not rush to move to the next position. We build up the flow slowly, so that your body gets to know the movements, so that you can eventually easily follow the constant flow at a calm pace.

Something magical happens when we synchronize movement and breath. We are truly present in the moment and enter a flow state. It becomes a meditation in movement, connected to our breath.

Although Yin Yoga is wonderfully relaxing, it does not compare to the relaxation that flow brings. Synchronizing movement and breathing changes our energy, improves our mood, takes us out of our head and into our body, discharges anxious energy and releases endorphins and can give us a natural high.
